At the Latin School of Chicago we commit significant resources of time, energy, and money to the professional development of our faculty and staff.
We support individual faculty both in attending and in presenting at regional
and national conferences, including the annual NAIS conference (www.nais.org),
the ISACS conference (www.isacs.org),
and the NAIS-sponsored People of Color Conference (www.nais.org).
Latin faculty members are widely represented on the list of presenters at
these conferences, as well as at conferences related to their particular disciplines
or areas of interest.
In addition to hosting conferences and bringing speakers
and workshop leaders to the School, we also encourage Latin faculty to apply
for sabbaticals and for School-administered funds for advanced degrees, summer
travel, and development of new curricula.
Professional development at Latin means enriching your teaching by committee work as well. Latin's professional development committees include:
- The Committee on Teaching and Learning (CTL)--a cross-divisional group
whose members meet twice a month to discuss issues related to teaching.
They also travel together to other schools to observe best practices,
attend a retreat, and visit and videotape each other's classes.
- Critical Friends Groups (CFG)---small volunteer groups from the School's three divisions who videotape their teaching and discuss issues related to their own curricula and pedagogy.
- The Committee for New Faculty and Staff--a group of both seasoned and young teachers who meet with our new teachers to help them through their first year at Latin.
- Mentors Committee--a group that works to mentor new teachers.
- Rookie Teacher Committee--a group that works to meet the needs of teachers who are both new to Latin and new to our profession.
- Independent Teacher -- an electronic journal that publishes articles on curriculum and pedagogy, across all grades and disciplines, of particular interest to independent school teachers. Independent Teacher's goal is to be a forum in which educators can share and discuss ideas and methods.
