Latin welcomes new faculty members for 2008-2009

Lower School Faculty

Cheryl Brodbeck will join Brian Woodhouse as the lower school’s second science and computer teacher. Cheryl holds a bachelor’s degree from Lehigh University and a master’s degree from Aurora University. She has taught science and math at several elementary schools in Connecticut, New York, and Illinois, including previous stints as the science-technology teacher and math lab teacher at our own lower school.

Sarah Everson, the new lower school counselor, was most recently an educational therapist at Chicago’s Virginia Frank Child Development Center; she has held a number of positions in early childhood teaching and counseling for youth and families. Sarah earned her B.A. in English at California Lutheran University and her M.A. in social work at the University of Chicago.

Sarah Johnston comes to us from Nathaniel Pope and Bret Harte elementary schools in Chicago. At Latin she will serve as the one of two lower school art teachers. Sarah also has taught second grade at Sidwell Friends School in Bethesda, MD. Her undergraduate degrees in psychology and studio art are from the College of William and Mary, and she holds an M.Ed. in elementary education and an M.A. in art education from the University of Maryland.

Lorraine Loomis joins us as a new third grade teacher. She has substituted at Latin since 2006, and has worked as a special education teacher in Virginia. Lorraine earned her bachelor’s degree in philosophy at Wheaton College in Massachusetts and holds supplemental certifications from The University of Virginia, Curry School of Education and the state of Illinois.

Tamara Rimoin graduated with a B.A. in human development from Indiana University and a master’s in early and elementary education from New York University; she also has completed institutes in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics at New York’s Teachers College and City College. She will be a junior kindergarten teacher at Latin. Most recently Tamara was the head kindergarten teacher at Public School 6, Lillie D. Blake School, in New York.

Karen Sweeney will join Latin as the lower school’s mathematics enrichment teacher. Karen taught math in elementary and middle schools in Michigan for more than 20 years. After earning a bachelor’s of science in education at University of Michigan, she completed a master of arts in education at San Diego State University. Karen has taught mathematics at a community college and has contributed to educational research projects. .

Middle School Faculty

Pablo Arancibia will teach Spanish in the middle school. He holds an undergraduate degree in Spanish literature and linguistics from the Catholic University of Chile and a master’s in education degree from Northern Illinois University. Pablo has taught in Cicero Public Schools since 2000.

Elizabeth Manning taught middle school science at Latin from 1999-2003. She will be returning to that position in the fall. Elizabeth also taught at Chicago City Day School after earning a B.A. in biology at the University of Chicago.

Juliana Reese-Clauson also is rejoining Latin’s faculty. Juliana taught upper school science from 1998-2002 and has substituted at Latin since then. She will be in Latin’s middle school next year. Most recently, Juliana worked at the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University and she has served as science instructor at a number of institutions. She earned her bachelor’s degree in science at Wheaton College, and her master’s in teaching and learning at DePaul.

Jason Tebbens will be a middle school physical education teacher next year. He comes to us from the Westtown School in Pennsylvania, where he was an upper school history teacher and advisor. He also coached soccer, basketball, and baseball and was a sabbatical replacement for the assistant director of athletics in 2007. Jason has been the director of aquatics and head swim team coach at Greenville Country Club in Greenville, DE from 2002 to the present. As a student at the University of Delaware, where he earned a bachelor’s degree, he worked as a coach for Tower Hill School.

Middle/Upper School Faculty

Jessica Dzieweczynski will teach middle and upper school Chinese. Jessica holds a B.A. from Lewis and Clark College and this year completed her master’s in Chinese pedagogy at Indiana University. At Indiana, she worked at the East Asian Language Center planning student trips to China, directing high school honors programs in Chinese, and promoting Chinese culture in the community. Jessica won a fellowship to spend 2007-08 studying in China, her second year-long stay in the country.

Caroline Secor joins Latin fresh from the M.A. program in educational leadership at the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her undergraduate degree in economics is from Kenyon College. Caroline will teach middle and upper school math, as she did for five years at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, MD.

Upper School

Sarah Bunger will teach English in the upper school. Sarah earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a master’s of education in English literature and secondary education from the University of Dayton. Before coming to Latin, she taught various English courses at Miamisburg High School in Ohio. Sarah has a great deal of AP experience and has served as co-chair of her department. She is the 2008 Ohio Outstanding English Educator, high school division.

Eugene Gross, our new math department chair, has been a teacher at Evanston Township High School, the upper school head at Francis W. Parker, the high school director at the Dalton School in New York, and head of school at the Benjamin School in Florida. At every stage of his career, Gene has been involved in math education, and his goal has been to return to Chicago and to the classroom. He is a graduate of Valparaiso University (B.A.) and Northwestern University (M.A.T.).

Bridget Hennessy is coming to Latin from Cabrini High School in New Orleans, where she was an English and history teacher; she will fill the same role at Latin. Her B.A. in history and English is from Loyola University in New Orleans, and her M.A. in history is from the University of New Orleans.

Joshua Phipps will teach upper school physics, as he did at the Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in New York. A native of Evanston, Joshua completed a B.A. and an M.A. in physics at New York’s Columbia University.

Nurses

Catherine Cates will take over the nurse’s duties in the lower school. She has been an elementary school nurse in Waukegan, and a home health nurse and Bank One’s Wellness Program coordinator in Chicago. Catherine has worked in nursing at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She completed her B.S.N. at the College of St. Teresa.

Kris Sabel will be the middle/upper school nurse. Kris comes to us from Resurrection Health Care and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, and Home Health United and St. Agnes Hospital in Wisconsin. Her B.S.N. was earned at Marian University.
